HBG Big News This Week: March 11-15, 2019

Following is a recap of major news at Hachette Book Group for the week of March 11-15, 2019:

Bestseller news: new to the New York Times bestseller list this week and charting high is Victor Davis Hanson’s The Case for Trump (Basic Books), debuting at #2 on both the Print Hardcover Nonfiction and Combined P&E bestseller lists. HBG has 11 books on the NYT list and our distribution clients have five books on the list this week.

Academy of Arts & Letters award: Jane Delury’s The Balcony (Little, Brown) has won the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction, awarded by the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

January industry results: The Association of American Publishers (AAP) reported January 2019 industry sales this week. Trade sales fell 3.2%, to $543.8 million. Sales of adult hardcover and mass market titles were particularly weak. The only two categories with major gains were downloaded audio, whose sales rose 36.1%, and children’s/YA, whose sales rose 4.3%, to $137.5 million. More detail on specific categories here.

Pachinko to Apple TV: Min Jin Lee’s Pachinko (GCP) will be an eight-episode drama on Apple TV.  Pachinko is the latest high-profile TV project to land at Apple and joins a roster that includes series starring Chris Evans, Hailee Steinfeld, Sara Bareilles and Jennifer Garner and content from producers like J.J. Abrams, M. Night Shyamalan, Damien Chazelle and Ron Moore, among others.
